Recent sunshine has enticed a few overwintering butterflies out into the garden. Whilst the odd Small Tortoiseshell and Red Admiral butterfly hasn’t been surprising a Hummingbird Hawkmoth certainly was.
This early record may have been either a migrant or one that had managed to hide away in a sheltered place and survive the winter.
The Hummingbird Hawkmoth is unique among European Hawkmoths in overwintering as an adult.
Other Hawkmoths can be seen in the moth galleries, caterpillar galleries and species pages.
