Introduction

Please note the moth pages are in the process of being updated

This Illustrated Guide to British Moths has been compiled, together with our Illustrated Guide to British Caterpillars, in response to the many questions we are asked when at schools and doing public moth nights. There is still much to learn about these fascinating creatures and as new information becomes available we will endeavour to update the content.

Moths play a vital role in our ecosystem and it is hoped that with better understanding and awareness the alarming decline in moth numbers in recent years can be reversed. Moths and their caterpillars are an important food source for many different animal species. A Blue Tit may need as many as 15,000 moth caterpillars to raise a single brood!
