Drake Common Scoter

with No Comments

It’s not every day that you find yourself feeding a Common Scoter with bread!

This Drake Common Scoter made the short flight from Falmouth Bay into the brackish water of Swanpool lake.

Unusually for a deep water diving duck it then began feeding on bread intended for the resident Mallards!

In fact it soon became extremely territorial attacking other waterfowl that dared to venture too close.

Swanpool lake is brackish and a SSSI site best known for being the only place where Trembling Sea Mat can be found in England.

The water can attract unusual bird species at any time of the year and is worth checking out by any birders visiting Falmouth.

Beside water birds the surrounding wooded banks often have numbers of warblers and scarce woodland birds such as Firecrests.
