Yellow Dung Fly: life on a cow pat

with 1 Comment
Golden yellow flies covering cow pats are a familiar sight but it’s rare, understandably, that anyone gets down to take a close look. These Yellow Dung Fly are quite spectacular beasts.

Insight into Yellow Dung Fly (Scathophaga stercoraria): common throughout Britain, in spring large numbers gather on cow, horse or sheep dung to mate and lay eggs.

The larvae feed on the dung.

They are an important food source for the Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros).
