British hoverflies: Eristalis pertinax

with No Comments
The identification of many British hoverflies is not easy and many require good views of various parts of the anatonomy that aren’t always possible in the field.

This hover was photographed as it paused briefly over some early flowering heather. I wasn’t sure what species it was but Leon Truscott suggested it was probably Eristalis pertinax which didn’t come as any great surprise as it is a common hoverfly in the garden.

Hopefully, if the weather settles and the sun comes out, a few more of these incredibly agile flying insects will appear. Many thanks to Leon.
