We found our first Wall, also known as Wall Brown, butterfly of the year sunning itself on the path at Godrevy on the north coast of Cornwall. This is an early date for Cornwall. Last year the first record was 19 April as reported in The Butterfly Observer, a publication from Cornwall Butterfly Conservation.
Insight: The Wall (Lasiommata megera) butterfly is widely distributed throughout England.
Both male and female enjoy sunbathing, getting heat from the bare ground and walls that reflect the warmth from the sun. It’s this habit of resting on walls that gives it its name.
