Are those blue flowers really Bluebells?

We were asked this by several holiday makers during a walk along the coast path above Crantock Beach, near Newquay at the weekend.

Questioning whether they were Bluebells was understandable given that to most people the Bluebell is a Spring woodland plant requiring lots of shade.

And to see them in the summer, within a few metres of the Atlantic Ocean and without a tree in sight certainly did make them look out of place.

Nevertheless, however out of place they may have appeared to some, to see carpets of this beautiful flower in full sun light was a fantastic sight.

Add to the blue haze the pinks of Thrift, multi coloured Kidney Vetch, bold Red Campion, white Sea Campion and yellow Birds-foot Trefoil and the Cornish coastal walks are stunning at the moment. See coastal wild flowers

And that’s not to mention the seabirds, breath taking seascape, butterflies …. when the sun does show this time of year really does take some beating!
