Birds

During recent strolls around the shoreline of Falmouth Bay we have regularly been asked “what are we photographing?” and “what is that bird?”.

Yesterday a Guillemot was feeding very close to Gyllyngvase Beach and so many people expressed an interest in what it was that we have posted a couple of photos of it above. Some of the other birds seen along the beaches of Falmouth in the last few days are shown below.

At least two Black Redstart are overwintering in the Castle Beach area. Lots of Pied Wagtails, Rock Pipits and a few Meadow Pipits are feeding amongst the seaweed deposited on the beaches in recent storms. Mediterranean Gulls are becoming more common throughout the UK and there is often at least one amongst the Black-headed Gulls on Swanpool Lake. The Carrion Crow with the pale primary feathers is often seen at Pendennis Point and last week there were three Purple Sandpipers on the rocks there. Recent raptors (birds of prey) seen are Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Merlin and Peregrine Falcon.

Of course, this is just a small number of the species to be seen and the gardens have been full of overwintering birds.
