British wading birds: Ringed Plover

with No Comments
Twelve juvenile Ringed Plover were resting at high water on rocks south of Gyllyngvase beach in Falmouth, Cornwall yesterday. The late summer/autumnal passage seems to be well underway with many wader species migrating south to their winter quarters either abroad or here in sunny Cornwall!

Insight into Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula): a fairly common small wader distributed around much of the UK, mostly on the coast but becoming increasingly common on inland waters such as gravel pits.

Many birds winter in the UK with numbers increased by an influx of migratory birds from colder parts of Europe. Migratory birds passing through the UK also include birds from Greenland and Canada.
