Brittlestars in rock pools

What fascinating places rock pools are? There is a whole new world of creatures and plants to become familiar with.

The amount of life in our local rock pools here on the south coast of Cornwall has noticeably increased in recent weeks. Amongst the Blennies, Gobies and Prawns several small Brittlestars were recorded last weekend.

Insight into Brittlestars: part of the Phylum Echinodermata group of sea creatures, along with starfish and sea urchins, they are radially symmetrical.

These quite remarkalble creature are prone to losing limbs hence their ‘brittle’ name but can regrow them. Provided a sufficient amount of the central disc remains a whole knew body can be regenerated from the lost limb.
