Not much in flower in December but plenty of fruits

These glossy orange-red seeds of Stinking Iris are plentiful along the sea cliffs around Falmouth, adding a festive bit of colour.

Insight into Stinking Iris (Iris foetidissima): the fruit will remain on the seed pods through the winter, being ignored by the birds.

According to the RHS one of this plant’s other names is “Scarlet-seeded iris” which is better than its common name in my book!

One of only two native Iris in Britain, the other being Yellow Iris (Iris pseudacorus).
