Cornwall butterflies: Peacock

with No Comments
Despite it being a regular occurence it always seems strange to see butterflies on a windswept rocky shoreline often within a few feet of breaking waves. This very fresh looking Peacock, which has to be one of the most beautiful butterflies in the world, was sunning itself at the foot of cliffs at Rosemullion Head, near Falmouth.

We don’t seem to have seen so many this year which may be the result of last years severe winter.

Insight into Peacock (Inachis io): a common butterfly throughout most of the UK, it is less well distributed further north and in Scotland.

It hibernates over winter as an adult and depending on the weather can be seen in almost every month of the year.
