Cornwall birds: Sandwich Tern

with No Comments
Two Sandwich Terns were feeding on sandeels close to the beach at Whitesand Bay, Sennon in Cornwall. The water was crystal clear and the birds seemed unperturbed by the bathers and holiday-makers walking on the beach within only a few yards of them.

Insight into Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis): a summer visitor to the UK, it can be found around the coastline in scattered breeding colonies. There are about 12,000 breeding pairs with the main populations extending from the north east to the south coast with much smaller numbers in the south west.

They are a very distinctive Tern with white plumage, black crest and yellow tip to a large black bill.
