Endangered plants in Cornwall – Pygmy Rush

with No Comments
This dwarf rush is only 8cm tall but is very noticeable despite it’s size because of its purplish colouring. We found this specimen in trackways at Windmill Farm Nature Reserve on The Lizard in Cornwall in April.

Insight into Pygmy Rush (Juncus pygmaeus): very rare, endangered plant, only found in south west Cornwall. It likes seasonally wet, compacted ground so the old trackways on Windmill Farm suit it perfectly. See Andy Pay’s post on the results of the recent restoration of 400m of old cart-tracks.

It flowers in May and June.
