Pheasant at Windmill Farm

Pheasants may not be native to the UK but a fine cock bird like this one has to be admired. This bird was seen enjoying the safety of Windmill Farm Nature Reserve on The Lizard Cornwall.

Insight into Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus): introduced into the UK probabaly as early as the 11th Century, they are now resident with a widespread breeding population thoughout much of the UK.

Millions are bred and released into the countryside annually for shooting and are considered a fine eating bird. The cock birds are unmistakably colouful but the females are dull in comparison and much less conspicuous.
