Crossing the Fal Estuary by boat to St Mawes on Thursday we came across a pod of about a dozen Bottlenose Dolphin frantically feeding on a shoal of fish.

Insight: Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) can be recorded in any month of the year. The other species occasionally seen off Cornwall include Risso’s Dolphin (Grampus griseus), Short-beaked or Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena).

Mystery still surrounds the death of 26 dolphins, washed up in one of the creeks of the Fal Estuary in June 2008.
