Insight: The Drinker (Euthrix potatoria) is a moth and it gets its name from the larva’s habit of drinking dew drops on its foodplant. Even its scientific or latin name comes from ‘potatorious‘, pertaining to drinking.
It is one of the most common caterpillars to be seen out and about in Cornwall at this time of year as they prepare to pupate.
The other common caterpillars out now are: Fox Moth (Macrothylacia rubi), Garden Tiger (Arctia caja) which is also known as Woolly Bear and Six-spot Burnet (Zygaena filipendulae).
