Overwintering Red Admirals feeding in garden

Another overwintering Red Admiral butterfly was feeding on winter flowering heather in our Cornish garden today.

This follows two different Red Admirals recorded in January.

Even in this mild part of Cornwall it’s unusual to see them flying during the winter, although the caterpillars can be found overwintering on nettles and Pellitory-on-the-Wall in very sheltered coastal sites.

Other butterflies can be seen in the British Butterfly gallery and European Butterfly gallery

Caterpillars can be seen in the Butterfly caterpillar gallery and Moth caterpillar gallery.
