This Goldfinch was singing away on a treetop near Trefusis Point, Falmouth.

Insight: Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) feed on thistles and knapweeds, extracting the seeds with their fine bills. Males are the only bird able to take the seeds from Teasel (Dipsacus fullonum), even female Goldfinch don’t have long enough bills.

A large part of the UK population, especially the females, are thought to migrate to mainland Europe for the winter.
