Our first caterpillar of 2011 seen at Kennack Sands

Things are certainly starting to warm up at last. The sun encouraged two over-wintered Fox Moth caterpillars to bask on a sheltered bank at Kennack Sands, part of the National Nature Reserve on The Lizard in Cornwall.

Insight: The larva has several changes of coat, known as instars, with the first stripy instar looking very different from the impressively hairy final one as shown above.
