A pair of Red-Breasted Merganser were fishing in Falmouth harbour early this morning. Conditions were hopeless for photography so here’s one I did earlier!

Insight: Red-breasted Merganser belong to the sawbill family because of the serrated edge to their bills.

These diving ducks are most often seen in coastal waters around the UK in winter when they can form large flocks in estuaries. They feed mainly on small fish and are one of the fastest flying birds in level flight.
